In order to be effective at enforcing child support orders you must be intimately familiar with federal and state child support laws and enforcement remedies, and understand how to implement the right enforcement remedies. You must also have the resources to do it.

Although government enforcement agencies (IV-D agencies) will enforce your child support order free of charge, they are often short-staffed and under-funded. Often times your case will not get the attention it requires and deserves. Moreover, if your child has emancipated, or you need help enforcing a spousal support order, IV-D agencies will not open a case for you.

Most family law firms do not have the knowledge and experience to enforce support orders, particularly in the area of interstate enforcement. Private law firms are also not likely to enforce your suppor order on a contingency basis. You will pay a large retainer fee up front, and they will keep it, whether they collect or not.
